1/9/14

Our first full day in Nicaragua began with a light breakfast at the hotel, Casa San Juan. We then embarked on a short trip on foot to the Nitlapan institute, which is located on the Universidad Centroamericana campus. Here we were introduced to the representatives of the organization that we would be working with, namely Yesenia and Maria.

Since it was only our first day, there was a significant amount of time spent simply gathering requirements for our project and learning more about Nitlapan’s operations. Even though not everyone in our group could speak Spanish, the language barrier was not a prohibitive issue, as we ultimately all understood what had to be done. Part of the inspiration behind the project was that we knew if we did a good job, we would be improving an organization that does a lot to help Nicaragua’s disadvantaged people.

After a nice lunch break at a local eatery called La Sazon which was within walking distance, the rest of the day was spent researching and writing up plans for completing the project. We worked until 5pm, and then stopped by a supermarket to get some essentials for the rest of our stay. One of the remarkable things that was noticed was the difference in price of the products, compared to our supermarkets in the U.S.

We returned to the hotel with our supplies and enjoyed a dinner at the hotel. This was followed by the decision to head out and experience the local nightlife for the first time, and the group indulged in some entertainment at a local Karaoke bar.
